How to write faster

Recently, I have been reading a lot of books on how to write more and faster. And, although I’m not always the biggest fan of the pushy advice given in those books, there is one thing I do agree with… If you write fast, you’ll finish your books faster.

Duh! But how do we even go about writing faster? Don’t you think that if I could write 5,000 words per hour, I would be doing it?

Obviously, we cannot start writing fast if we barely even written before. It needs practice just like everything in life. But I discovered two exercises that have helped me get better.

Typing online games

I once saw a very funny video of how Kami Garcia types with only 3 fingers. I use 7 fingers to type most of the time and I found that crazy. How can she write so much with only 3 fingers?

It’s true, we are not all the same and maybe your typing speed (or typing fingers) works for you. In that case, you do you.

But if you want to learn how to type faster, consider training with some of the online typing games available. I have loads of fun with them when I’m not in the mood to write and that way I feel like I’m doing something productive.

Have a structured idea before

Nothing gets me typing words on a keyboard faster than having a list of things I know will be happening in a scene.

My most productive days of writing are when I plan it the day before. I can only write in the morning, so I usually do a morning session of writing. Then, I spend the afternoon writing bullet points of things that will happen in the next scene. That way, once I sit down, I just have to write beautiful prose while following the list of events.
